PA reaffirms East Jerusalem part of occupied Palestinian territories

In a statement published on its website, Hamas urged Palestinians to uphold their inalienable right move in and out of the holy compound freely.

TENSIONS in Jerusalem rose sharply on Tuesday, after violent Palestinian protests on the Temple Mount that involved a firebomb attack on an Israel police post.

Tension has mounted in Jerusalem since last month, when Israeli police briefly sealed the Al-Aqsa compound's Al-Rahma Gate, sparking angry Palestinian demonstrations.

All of the entrances to the Temple Mount were ordered closed following the attack to enable police to search for weapons.

The spot, home to the Al-Aqsa Mosque and gold-topped Dome of the Rock, is a frequent flashpoint of violence.

Monday's incident comes a day after Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan vowed that there will be "no second mosque on the Temple Mount" and that "God willing" Jews will be able to pray there freely in the near future.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas denounced the "dangerous Israeli escalation" and warned of "serious repercussions".

"The Ramallah government subsequently issued a separate statement via the official WAFA news agency saying police prevented a call for prayer from the Al Aqsa Mosque, and "attacked Palestinians who gathered" outside one of the main gates of the Temple Mount compound, ostensibly to perform the evening prayer".

The statement called on the worldwide community to break its silence and to promote its positions from condemnation throughout leaflets and statements to practical actions by the United Nations resolution.

"We can not accept such reckless attacks on holy sites and the whole world needs to react against it", the Turkish state-run Anadolu Agency quoted Cavusoglu as saying.

The Palestinian Authority (PA) reaffirmed on Tuesday that East Jerusalem is part of the Palestinian territories occupied by Israel in 1967 and the eternal capital of the state of Palestine. The area was closed in 2003 after allegations that the group overseeing the site was linked to terror activity.
