"Dozens of children were trapped inside", said Adesina Tiamiyu, head of Lagos state emergency management agency (SEMA), which is supervising the rescue operation.

A child could be seen being rescued and carried away through a crowd of people.

NAN gathered that most of the victims were rescued from the rubble on Wednesday, but died at the General Hospital as doctors failed to save them.

Rescue efforts are underway in Nigeria after a three-storey school building collapsed while classes were taking place inside. "It is heartless to ask a woman who just lost four children to go and start looking for 150,000 to save the life of the last surviving child, please intervene on our behalf".

One of the traders with a shop at the building, Emeka Chukwuka, also said the house had been showing signs of crack before it eventuality collapsed yesterday.

Aishat Onilenla said three of her sister's three children were trapped in the collapsed building.

The governor said his deputy, Oluranti Adebule, had also visited the hospitals where some of the victims rescued had been taken to, saying the state government would immediately take over their treatment and foot their entire bill.

"Most of the patients came in through General Hospital and Massey Children Hospital from where they were referred to other hospitals, including Lagos State University Teaching Hospital; Mainland General Hospital and General Hospital, Yaba".

Hundreds of concerned residents flooded the area in the immediate aftermath of the collapse as rescue workers began removing rubble.

"Inquiries must be made about the operator of the school and the owner of the building".

Onlookers said a school with about 100 students was located on the building's top floor.

Many locals said that the building, which was in an advanced state of disrepair, had been "earmarked" for demolition by the authorities in Lagos state.

John Vandemoor, a former Stanford University sailing coach, is also scheduled to plead guilty to racketeering conspiracy charges. Ms Huffman and Ms Loughlin were due to appear in Federal Court in Los Angeles later on Tuesday, prosecutors said.

It was not clear if her dead niece, who had attended the school since the age of 2, was the same person cited by the Lagos emergency agency as having died in the collapse.

The building, which houses a primary school on the second floor, caved in on Wednesday morning while pupils were in their classrooms. All we are trying to do is to scale up this rescue operation.

"It is unfortunate that such incident happened".

"That is what is important to us and the more lives we save, the better for us", he said.

He told NAN that BCPG had brought such distressed buildings to the notice of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) for demolition.

Onilenla said: "My friend has seven children also trapped in the rubble".
