Whether facebook is down for maintenance, we are unsure, but users have been complaining all over the web that neither Facebook nor Instagram is allowing them to login.

According to downdetector.com, users began reporting outages just before noon. Instagram was worse: posts weren't loading, Instagram Stories were down, and direct messages and the button to post new content were also not working.

According to Facebook's developer dashboard, it's been six hours since the social media website and app went down for millions of people.

Facebook has since responded to the issues on Twitter (ironic), saying that they are working to resolve the problems at hand.

Earlier in Facebook's history, technical issues were a more common occurrence as the social network raced to keep up with explosive user growth.

While Facebook and Instagram have been down, many have turned to Twitter to make jokes about the outage.

Downdetector.com, a site that monitors site outages, said the Facebook problem affected parts of the US, including the East and West Coast; parts of Europe and elsewhere.
