China Claims Credit for Helping Defuse India-Pakistan Tensions

India accused Pakistan of harbouring the Jaish-e-Mohammad group behind the attack and Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised a strong response.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesman Raveesh Kumar told the media that, "We are seeing the same script that has been played out earlier after the terrorist attacks on our Parliament in December 2001, the Mumbai terrorist attack in November 2008 and the attack on Pathankot airbase in January 2016".

Despite the ongoing tensions between Pakistan and India, it was revealed on Saturday that the lion's share of foreigners seeking Pakistani citizenship came from the eastern neighbour during the last 10 years.

As many as 22 terrorist training camps, including nine of Jaish-e-Mohammed are active in Pakistan, but no action is being taken against them, a senior Indian official said in Washington on Thursday, warning that New Delhi will carry out operation similar to that of the Balakot airstrike if there is an act of terrorism coming from across the border. The JeM had taken the responsibility of the attack in the view of which tensions between India and Pakistan flared up.

Pakistan is a "global epicentre of terrorism and it needs to take verifiable and credible steps against terrorist organisations and terrorists", said the official on condition of anonymity.

On February 18, Pakistan had also called back its high commissioner appointed in India for consultations in the aftermath of the Pulwama attack.

"The widespread presence of terrorist camps in Pakistan is public knowledge within and outside Pakistan".

New Delhi has heavily criticised Islamabad's failure to rein in militant groups operating on Pakistani soil.

He also said Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan had asked India to send evidence it has against any individuals.

"India hasn't shared yet any actionable information and proof against anybody", he added.

Pakistan has denied any damage or casualties, and independent reporting has shown the strikes hit a heavily forested area with little infrastructure nearby. One day later Pakistan responded with fighter jets crossing into Indian-administered Kashmir.
