The montage of Brie Larson's title character falling and getting up through her life forms part of a longer scene of inspiring personal triumph, but it still feels like visual shorthand.

According to the Telegraph, the Room actress gives a "terrific" performance that is "big on girl-boss attitude".

While the good reviews veer closer to the centre of the critical aisle, highlighting the film's pleasures while reserving some space for their issues with the pacing and the plot, the negative reviews go all out.

Todd McCarthy, for The Hollywood Reporter, writes "The picture is not tiresome, exactly, just mundane, marked by unimaginative plotting, cut-rate villains, a bland visual style and a lack of elan in every department".

So yeah, it's a pretty cool move for Larson in the middle of the hype for Captain Marvel, which is already looking at $350 million+ at the box office.

In said interview, he spoke about needing help and denied having relationships with young girls held against their will. When asked if he's an older man who likes younger women, he replied, "I'm an older man that likes all women".

Screen Daily's Tim Grierson expresses similar reservations, calling the film "fun and breezy but also a tad familiar" and its action sequences "sturdy but unspectacular".

- Directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck and Larson, who are also co-writers of the screenplay with Geneva Robertson-Dwore appear uninspired and to have struggled to incorporate MCU's continuity within the film, or even the likeability of Danvers. While it may be a Marvel movie, it shares a deeper spiritual DNA with movies like Memento and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, than it does, say, Ant-Man.

David Ehrlich of Indiewire calls the film one of "the most disappointing Marvel movies", finding issue with its confused and disjointed first act, and drawing unfavourable comparisons to Star Trek and Wonder Woman. With the exception of a mid-credits scene that takes place after the events of 2018's Avengers: Infinity War, the primary connection here is Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), largely pre-eye patch and sporting a full head of hair, who shows up when Larson's odd being crashes to Earth claiming to be a soldier engaged in a massive alien war, many galaxies away. Instead, it is a solidly constructed and engaging bit of scaffolding that, while fitting neatly within the overarching storyline of the Marvel movies, only occasionally reaches the Pop Art delirium of the best of those films. She also reconnects with her Earth BFF Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch) and Maria's cute-as-a-button 11yo daughter Monica (Akira Akbar). "And at some point, we'll find out how powerful she is and all the things that she's capable of". "But it doesn't disappoint". "And an orange feline named Goose is the best movie cat ever!", wrote Rolling Stone's Peter Travers. It wasn't until after the movie that I noticed that four out of the five screenwriters are women, maybe a first for this genre.

Captain Marvel opens in the United Kingdom and USA on Friday, which has been designated International Women's Day 2019.

Unsurprisingly, the mysteries begin to unravel as Carol starts to question her past more and more, which sends her following a trail of breadcrumbs that lead her back to Earth, circa 1995 - more than a decade before Tony Stark would shock the world with his Iron Man confession.

I spent a perfectly enjoyable two hours watching Captain Marvel on Monday. The continued push for diversity makes sense after the studio's success with Black Panther and the excitement around the upcoming Captain Marvel, but there's only one problem-there's no actual confirmation of the casting news.

While the film is full of amusing moments, Captain Marvel herself is nearly entirely humourless.

At Apple, Larson is joining another Marvel superhero star. There's also no unnecessary love story crowbarred into proceedings.

This is Larson's latest project in the works following her anticipated role as Carol Danvers in the upcoming Captain Marvel, which hits theaters this Friday. She can fly, shoot photon beams from her hands and even walk through walls.
