"Motown was an historically black label and the bulk of that Motown tribute was by Jennifer Lopez", another critic said. Smokey Robinson, who joined Lopez on stage Sunday, defended her during a pre-Grammy gala on Saturday.

"My abs", she says of her favorite thing, before DeGeneres turned the question to her former pro-baseball player boyfriend.

In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Tonight, she said, "You can't tell people what to love". However, if you ask a mid-60's black dude from Detroit, they may not agree, and that seems to be the general consensus on Twitter.

Jennifer Lopez won't turn 50 until July 24, so her 50th birthday tour will build up through the summer.

The star also got some fervent support from Robinson, who told Variety ahead of the Grammys, "I don't think anyone who is intelligent is upset".

Despite Robinson's defense of Lopez, many took to Twitter after the performance and offered a scorching critique. Lopez has Gaines' new book, a gift from her sister, and gushes over it "every night". "I grew up on all those songs and because my mom loved him so much she passed him on to us".

Lopez, 49, is a self-professed superfan of the hit HGTV series Fixer Upper - and the star revealed she could barely contain her excitement when Rodriguez surprised her with a FaceTime call with the show's star Joanna Gaines.

Berry Gordy, who stood during Lopez's performance, founded Motown Records in 1959.

Motown's reputation for diversity and inclusion is a source of pride for the musician he explains, so the discussion surrounding Jennifer's performance is upsetting.

But considering the barriers that black artists from the Motown era faced to get recognition, the choice seems especially thoughtless. If not J Lo, who would you have liked to see take the stage?
