Democratic members of Congress, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., center, pose for a photo before President Donald Trump delivers his State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress on Capitol Hill in Washington, Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2019.

Pelosi's goal for Tuesday night, experts said, was to convey firmness and self-control. "We must reject the cynicism that says allowing every eligible vote to be cast and counted is a "power grab, '" she added, a reference to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's description of House Democrats" efforts to overhaul USA election law.

The women of the House wore white.

Trump drew disdain from many Democrats while calling for legislation that would ban late-term abortions, even in cases where a mother's life could be at risk.

Trump, surprised, said, "You weren't supposed to do that". "No one has benefited more from our thriving economy than women, who have filled 58 percent of the newly created jobs previous year", he said, and he seemed genuinely surprised when a number of female Democrats, all clad in white, stood and cheered.

The recent 35-day partial government shutdown over wall funding was evidence of Trump's weakened position. "That's why I thought it was important to bring whistleblower Joel Clement to the speech tonight to help give voice to those the Trump Administration has tried to silence on the issue of climate change".

Trump accepted no blame for his role in cultivating the rancorous atmosphere in the nation's capital, and he didn't outline a clear path for collaborating with Democrats who are eager to block his agenda. "Great nations do not fight endless wars".

The speech painted a portrait of menacing immigrants endangering Americans and a sharp challenge to Congress to build the wall.

And a POLITICO/Morning Consult poll from January 30 found that the number of voters who saw a "crisis" at the border - 4 in 10 - was virtually unchanged over the last three weeks of the shutdown.

For the most part when getting dressed in the morning, one tends to reach for whatever piece calls out to them most. It has a plus/minus 3 percentage-point margin of error.

"He's had a chance to win the public over to his thinking on this, but in order to do that, he had to be more disciplined in keeping the focus on border security, not the wall", observed GOP strategist Matt Mackowiak before the State of the Union.
