Maple Leafs sign superstar center Auston Matthews to massive extension

A story by Dave Feschuk of The Toronto Star surfaced late Tuesday in the hours after Auston Matthews signed a five-year contract extension, and it was lined with quotes indicating the two sides are far apart in contract discussions.

With players who demonstrate leadership like John Tavares (who was recently a captain on his former team), Auston Matthews and Morgan Reilly on the Toronto Maple Leafs, it becomes hard to see Marner getting that coveted "C" on his jersey.

For any team to offer Mitch Marner anything above a total contract value of $50,741,515 or an Average Annual Value of $10,148,303, they would have to give up 4 first round draft picks.

The Auston Matthews contract extension is done.

He was drafted by the Maple Leafs at No. 1 overall in the 2016 National Hockey League draft.

However, he said he would discuss specifics in a closed session with the panel, planned for Tuesday afternoon. And when he addressed the Senate Armed Services Committee, Votel warned that an ISIS resurgence is possible.

The 21-year-old Marner leads the Leafs in scoring this season with 63 points (20 goals and 43 assists).

He may not exceed the 40 goals he scored in 2016 because he missed nearly all of November with a shoulder injury. Matthews is fourth in points with 46, and second in goals with 23 behind Tavares.

Matthews was named the NHL's Rookie of the Year and named to the NHL's All-Rookie Team for 2016-2017.

As of now, the Maple Leafs are 32-17-3, good for 67 points and second in the Atlantic behind the Lightning. He has only played 38 of Toronto's 52 regular-season games due to injury.

There was also history in the broadcast booth with 85-year-old Bob Cole calling the game.

He has also represented the United States at two World Junior Championships (2015, 2016), capturing a bronze in 2016, two World U-18 Championships (2014, 2015), capturing gold at both, and the 2014 World U-17 Hockey Challenge. His 1.21 points per game is the best he has posted since debuting with Toronto in 2016.

Rather than commit the organization to an eight-year max contract, the Leafs made a decision to sign Matthews to a deal that brings him right to unrestricted free agency.

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner is known for his slick passes on the ice. Last year, Toronto general manager Kyle Dubas stated he "can and will" sign Nylander, Matthews and Marner.

This past off-season, Tavares joined the Maple Leafs when he signed a seven-year, $77-million contract in free agency. Fellow forwards Nazem Kadri, Zach Hyman, defensemen Morgan Rielly, and Nikita Zaitsev, plus goaltender Frederik Andersen are now the only Maple Leafs signed through at least 2020/21.

These planned layoffs come just after job listings at the company hit all-time lows in the past month, with as little as 26 individual openings at the company being listed.

Contract talks with Marner, however, have been put on hold until after the season, at his agent's request. It's also a shorter deal than an eight-year max that no one would have scoffed at for Matthews, as the Maple Leafs look to maintain a bit of financial flexibility.
