General Motors Company (GM) today will begin firing 4,000 salaried employees in Canada and the United States as it copes with falling demand for combustion engine cars while transitioning to electric vehicles (EVs).

Other plants slated to close include Michigan's Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly, Lordstown in OH, and transmission plants in the Detroit suburb of Warren, and in Baltimore, Md.

Layoffs start Monday in the 15-percent reduction in white collar jobs in North America.

"This is about making sure that GM is lean and agile", CEO Mary Barra said in announcing the cuts November 26.

These planned layoffs come just after job listings at the company hit all-time lows in the past month, with as little as 26 individual openings at the company being listed.

And, as an added insult to the sacked employees, GM wants to complete as numerous layoffs as possible before it reports its earnings Wednesday, sources briefed on the matter revealed. These include the Chevrolet Cruze, the Cadillac CT6, the Chevrolet Volt hybrid and the Buick LaCrosse.

The automaker also is working with Canadian universities and government officials to assist some 3,000 workers affected by the closure of an Ontario plant, a GM spokesman said.

The company said last October that it would offer buyouts to 18,000 workers with more than 12 years with the company across its North American operations as part of cost-cutting efforts.

GM, as part of its statement Monday, reiterated the reasoning and timing of the cuts: "These actions are necessary to secure the future of the company, including preserving thousands of jobs in the USA and globally".

Beyond the salaried workers who face job cuts, another 6,000 hourly workers at the five plants could still find their positions in jeopardy because of the restructuring.

"You know, the United States saved General Motors, and for her (Barra) to take that company out of OH is not good", Trump said previous year.
