Trump steps up attacks on Pelosi for opposing border wall funds

During an interview with CBS's Margaret Brennan which aired Sunday morning on "Face the Nation", Trump responded to a question about what he has learned about negotiating with the House speaker by accusing Pelosi of wanting "open borders" and being indifferent to "human trafficking" even though she knows the United States needs border security and some sort of border barrier.

Construction of a border wall was one of Trump's signature 2016 campaign promises, and he repeatedly said at the time that Mexico would pay for it. He wants $5.7 billion in wall funding, while Democratic lawmakers have offered more money for other border security provisions.

The government entered into a partial shutdown in December over a stand-off between Trump and his opponents in the Democratic Party, who refused to pass legislation giving the president $US5.7 billion ($A7.9 billion) to construct sections of a wall on the border with Mexico.

In defending the wall, Trump recited his usual list of talking points, claiming drugs are "pouring in" and that there are "people dying all over the country because of people like Nancy Pelosi who don't want to give proper border security for political reasons".

'This really is an invasion of our country by human traffickers. "Democrats have put forward strong, smart and effective border security solutions in the bipartisan conference committee, while the President still refuses to take a second shutdown off the table".
