Punxsutawney Phil predicts an early spring

The 1993 film "Groundhog Day" starring Bill Murray, gave world fame to the groundhog Phil, but he's not the only weather marmot.

The day derives from an old Germanic tale that each year a groundhog will poke its head up out of its den.

Just past year, many were upset with the groundhog when he predicted six more weeks of winter.

Should he not see his shadow, we will have an early spring.

The world's most famous groundhog, woke up and announced an early spring at Gobbler's Knob in Punxsutawney, PA.

These Pennsylvanian groundhogs enjoyed quiet lives until 1887, when a groundhog-hunting newspaper editor declared that Punxsutawney's groundhog Phil was the nation's only "true" weather-forecasting groundhog.

Saturday was the 133rd annual trek of the Punxsutawney Ground Club to Gobbler's Knob. However, if he didn't see it then an early spring (and warmer temperatures) were on the way.

In addition, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has officially stated that Punxsutawney Phil has "no predictive skill".

According to the Groundhog Day Web site, the Groundhog Day celebration began with Pennsylvania's earliest settlers.
