House minority leader Kevin McCarthy did not specify what the action would be, but said he would meet King on Monday to discuss his role in the party.

King has faced criticism after he told The New York Times that he thought it was wrong white nationalism and white supremacy were considered offensive.

Many were outraged by King's comments questioning the offensiveness of white supremacy. Scalise also took a shot at Democrats for failing to condemn the controversial comments made by their side.

After the interview was published, King backtracked on his comments, saying, "I reject those labels and the evil ideology they define". "I am dedicated to keeping America this way".

Yet still, the party struggles with a negative perception on civility and fairness brought on by people who make comments like King, or the people in the Republican Party who remain silent instead of ridiculing comments like King's.

"Steve's remarks are beneath the dignity of the Party of Lincoln and the United States of America", McCarthy said in a statement after the meeting.

Yet, when Americans hear people like King claim that white nationalists and white supremacists are not offensive, it has a negative impact on the entire Republican party.

"If Republicans really believe these racist statements have no place in our government, then their party must offer more than shallow temporary statements of condemnation", CBC Chairwoman Rep.

King had been the highest-ranking Republican on the powerful House Judiciary Committee, and has for years been an outspoken anti-immigration voice with a penchant for inflammatory rhetoric.

McCarthy didn't specify what actions could be taken with King, but said he planned to sit down with the Iowa lawmaker on Monday.

Representative Steve Scalise of Louisiana, the No. 2 House Republican, also stopped short of calling for specific punishments, and countered on ABC's "This Week" that Democrats hadn't policed bigotry in their own ranks - especially Antisemitism. As with any animal that is rabid, Steve King should be set aside and isolated.

The removal of King from the roles comes just hours after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., slammed the representative for remarks he made about the terms "white nationalist" and "white supremacist".

King met Monday afternoon with McCarthy of California.

After that article created a firestorm King sought to clarify those comments - but never fully walked away from them.

King has already drawn a primary challenger for the 2020 election: Randy Feenstra, a state senator.

"I may not have everybody with me, but this is one member of Congress [who] will stand up to Steve King and his entire ilk and ideology", he said.
