Trump demands USA border wall, sidesteps declaring emergency

Trump repeated his call for a wall on the border, calling it "absolutely critical to border security".

She said: "The fact is: President Trump must stop holding the American people hostage, must stop manufacturing a crisis, and must reopen the government".

The fact-checking nonprofit PolitiFact, run by the Poynter Institute, said on Twitter that it will live fact-check the president's address Tuesday night.

U.S. President Donald Trump is taking his case for U.S. -Mexico border wall funding to prime-time television, as he looks to convince Americans that border security - amid an influx of Central American migrants - must be strengthened before a partial government shutdown can be ended.

Democrats have not requested a steel barrier. Current Democratic leaders also voted for border fencing in 2006 and 2013, a change of heart that the president has highlighted multiple times. Some say Trump's hardline policies are slowing processing for migrants, creating an overwhelming bottleneck at the border.

But the letter also provided a fuller picture of Trump's border demands. 'We have an absolute crisis , ' he said of the border. Some border security officials said they agree with his demand for a wall. "Good solution, and made in the U.S.A".

Democratic leaders in the House and Senate released a joint statement saying the speech would be misleading and demanding airtime to counter Mr Trump's arguments.

"I think the best thing the president can do for the Republican Party is to make a persuasive case of why he wants more money, of why it's a crisis", Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, a close Trump ally, told reporters.

Mr Schumer was harsher in his criticism, accusing Mr Trump of throwing a temper tantrum and using millions of Americans as leverage.

Adding, he said that illegal migration strains public resources and drives down jobs and wages.

"The symbol of America should be the Statue of Liberty, not a thirty-foot wall". -Mexican border, illegal crossings there have actually dropped dramatically in recent years.

All the major TV networks have agreed to air the address, despite widespread backlash from critics who point to the president's routine falsehoods and say media outlets should not help him spread political propaganda.

Research also indicates that undocumented immigrants are much less likely to commit crime than native-born American citizens.

A growing proportion of Americans blame Mr Trump for the government shutdown, although Republicans mostly support his refusal to approve a budget that does not include funds for the wall, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Tuesday. But even if blocked, Trump could claim to his base that he had done what he could, while ending the damaging government shutdown.

But the president would be accused of usurping Congress's constitutional power of the purse, and the move would be bogged down in a quagmire of legal challenges.

Matt Dallek, a political historian at George Washington University, predicted that as the shutdown drags on, pressure will mount on Mr. Trump to back down from his demands. But he took little action to get it built during his first two years in office.

Some correspondents have speculated that he may ultimately resort to such a declaration as a last-ditch tactic to allow him to reopen the government without losing face to Democrats.
