Vice President Mike Pence was scheduled to meet with congressional leadership staff on Sunday afternoon, where, according to two congressional sources, aides would be given the White House's budget justification for about $5.7 billion for the border wall.

President Trump doubled down on his remarks about potentially declaring a national emergency over border security.

"The only reason they do not want to build a Wall is that Walls Work!"

It pits Trump's unpredictable negotiating stylings against a largely united Democratic front, as many Republicans watch nervously from the sidelines and hundreds of thousands of federal workers go without pay.

He said he planned to call the heads of American steel companies in hopes of coming up with a new design for the barrier he contends must be built along the southern border.

As Democrats prepare a flurry of investigations into the conduct of Mr. Trump and the ties between Russian Federation and his presidency and campaign - and as much of the Democratic base and some of the members of the House Democratic caucus clamour to begin impeachment procedures - the fraught relationship between the White House on the one hand and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer on the other is infected by a fresh brawl over immigration.

"They only want to impeach me because they know they can't win in 2020", the president said, adding,"As I have stated many times, if the Democrats take over the House or Senate, there will be disruption to the financial markets". Speaking on CNN's "State of the Union", Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff called the idea a "nonstarter".

On Friday, the President said that he was willing to allow the shutdown to last "months or even years" if funding is not allotted for a border wall. We won the Senate, they won the House.

The president has already suggested his definition of the wall is flexible, referring to slats and other "border things". A day earlier, he had tweeted he didn't care that "most of the workers not getting paid are Democrats". It does not affect a 2.6% pay increase for U.S. troops that was passed as part of the massive defense spending bill Trump signed in August.

Democratic Senator Doug Jones, appearing on the same programme, said the White House has not presented a plan to use the money.
