President Trump on Friday threatened to close the southern border if Democrats do not relent in the standoff over border security funding, which has resulted in a partial government shutdown that so far has lasted a week. The official noted that the Democratic lawmakers appear more concerned with preserving Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi's likely speakership than end a partial government shutdown.

"If they can't do it before January 3, then we will do it", said Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass., incoming chairman of the Rules Committee.

Glenn Hamer, president with the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry, told KTAR News 92.3 FM in November that if the border were to close, it would do major damage to Arizona's economy. Congressional Democrats have rejected that figure and in recent weeks have refused to publicly endorse a figure above $1.3 billion, which continues existing funding levels and includes money for new border fencing and levee walls, but not the concrete wall Trump once demanded before he started more recently talking about "steel slats".

There was a different body language, physicality, and in his hold-up play he has to be that week in week out for us to evolve as a team.

About 90 minutes later, Trump made clear he already is viewing the shutdown and border wall fight in terms of how it might help him during his re-election campaign.

The press secretary said the president has bent over backwards trying to make a deal on border security to put a stop to the human and drug trafficking that's happening at the southern border.

In Mexico, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador sidestepped Trump's threat, telling journalists: "We don't want to be imprudent and we don't think we should get into this".

In the new Congress, Senate Republicans will increase their number of seats to 53 but still will need Democratic support to pass any legislation requiring a 60-vote majority.

No signs of a deal to end partial government shutdown
Mr Trump said he envisions a wall so tall "like a three-story building", that only an Olympic champion would be able to scale it. Banderas laid out a series of reasons why the wall won't be built, including the enormous cost of buying up land on the border.

After sitting for just a few minutes following a break for Christmas, the almost empty Senate adjourned until 10:00 am (1500 GMT) on Monday and was to continue budget deliberations only next Wednesday, which will be the 12th day of the shutdown. "I am not going to tell you what it is", Mulvaney said. "We will be cutting off all aid to these 3 countries - taking advantage of USA for years!"

Trump also said the USA would cut off all aid to Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador for "taking advantage of (the) US for years!"

He also slammed past presidents and Congresses, claiming that the nation's current immigration laws were a joke. The White House would have to notify Congress if it wanted to cut or reallocate aid, which could delay or complicate the process.
