Syrian regime 'confronts' Israeli missiles near Damascus

Syrian regime's air defenses confronted late Tuesday "hostile targets" west of Damascus, the state-run news agency Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported.

The director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that Israeli raids were targeting weapons storage areas of Iranian militias and Hezbollah positions in the countryside of Damascus.

After reports that an Israeli aircraft launched a missile attack on an arms depot near Damascus, Israeli media reported more information showing possible links to Iranian activities in Syria.

No injuries or damage were reported, the IDF told CNN. Israel's air strike was conducted minutes after the leaders boarded a plane bound for Iran.

Syria confirmed that most of the missiles were intercepted before they could land.

Konashenkov said the Syrian military didn't fully engage its air defence assets to avoid accidentally hitting the passenger jets.

Israel responded to a missile fired from Syrian territory after reportedly striking military targets in Damascus.

However, the Jerusalem Post cited air monitoring site in its report saying "two suspicious Iranian planes left Damascus on Tuesday night just prior" to the airstrikes.

Israel is widely believed to have been behind a series of airstrikes in the past that mainly targeted Iranian and Hezbollah forces fighting alongside the government in Syria.

The territory includes some of the richest oil fields in north and east Syria but also is home to large Arab populations. The rulers and peoples of this region are going to have to find their own way and fight their own wars.

In messages sent out to the U.N. secretary-general and the president of the U.N. Security Council, the ministry said that the Israeli airstrike wouldn't have been launched if it wasn't for what it called "unlimited" USA support for Israel.
