Wednesday was the final PMQs for the year and it was dominated by questions about the UK's exit from the European Union, with Britain now heading towards a hard Brexit on March 29 next year unless Mrs May's deal is passed by parliament in the new year.

In the immediate aftermath of the comments, Mr Corbyn faced shouts of "shame" and "disgrace".

May retorted that all MPs must refer to women in an "appropriate" way, and after PMQs ended the House descended into chaos as Tories demanded Speaker John Bercow haul Corbyn back to apologise.

Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn was caught on camera appearing to mutter the insult during the prime minister's weekly question-and-answer session.

"But I think what we are dealing with is a situation. where the Prime Minister has behaved in a reckless and cynical manner by pushing the vote back on her deal, which she knows can not pass Parliament, in an attempt to try to force MPs to back her deal".

Conservative Party Chair Brandon Lewis wrote on Twitter: "Will Jeremy Corbyn apologise or clarify exactly what he was saying?"

Asked whether he was tempted to give MPs a range of options to vote on, Mr Clark told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: 'I think, obviously, it's important, once the prime minister has finished her negotiations with other European leaders and the Commission, that Parliament votes on that. "As I understand it, he said 'stupid people, '" the spokesperson said.

Mrs May had said Mr Corbyn was being "ineffective" by not tabling a no-confidence motion, then tabling one that is ineffective.

Mr Boles said yesterday he would resign the party whip and vote against the government if there was a vote on a "no deal" Brexit.

Mr Corbyn could be seen saying something under his breath in response.

Bercow eventually agreed to review the film of Corbyn's remark, with the aid of "lip speakers". A complaint was sent to the Commons standards commissioner over this alleged comment in May.

Mr Corbyn insisted he was completely opposed to the use of sexist or misogynist language.

Mr Bercow said her request was "reasonable" and he would respond the same day.
