Manchester United says Jose Mourinho has left the Premier League club with immediate effect.

The Portuguese was criticised for his tactics at United, with some suggesting he had gone away from the style of play that was established under Alex Ferguson.

A serial victor of trophies throughout his coaching career - his title haul now stands at 25 - Mourinho arrived at Old Trafford in 2016 as a supposed quick fix for United following its struggles after the retirement of Ferguson three years earlier.

A new caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the current season, while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager'.

Meanwhile, £50m summer signing Fred has made eight appearances in the Premier League this season.

The Red Devils now sit sixth in the Premier League table but have already lost five times in 17 matches, leaving them 19 points behind leaders Liverpool and 11 off fourth-placed Chelsea in the fight for Champions League places.

Pogba took to Instagram just moments after news of Mourinho's sacking broke, posting a picture of himself smiling and writing "caption this" next to it.

The move was a long time coming.

In his six major coaching stints - at Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Chelsea again and United - Mourinho has only lasted more than three years once.

The decision was announced two days after a 3-1 loss to Liverpool on Sunday, which left Manchester United 19 points off the top of the Premier League after 17 games.

But the former Juventus player was repeatedly criticised by Mourinho during his two-and-a-half year reign.
