Google Announces New $1 Billion Manhattan Campus In Hudson Square

The Alphabet company now has more than 7,000 employees working in New York City.

On Thursday, Apple announced that it'll build a new $1 billion campus in Austin, Texas, as part of an expansion across the US. Inc. recently announced it had split its new second headquarters in half, between the Washington, D.C., suburbs and Long Island City, in the NY borough of Queens. It has also expressed interest and signed a letter of intent for 550 Washington Street. According to official statistics, tech sector employment in the NY grew by 65 percent to reach an estimated 134,700 from 2010 to 2017.

The company will expand by leasing buildings at 550 Washington Street and at 315 and 345 Hudson Street in the West Village. Many high-tech workers are choosing to live elsewhere, forcing major tech companies to look in new places for the employees they need.

Google has contributed more than $150 million in grants and employee-matched giving to NY nonprofit institutions since 2011, according to Porat. The bulk of the company's New York workers is now located at 111 Eighth Avenue, a massive block-long building that was previously owned by the New York Port Authority.

Earlier this week, a Chinese court issued a set of preliminary injunctions in the patent fight between Apple and Qualcomm . Recently, a Chinese court ruled in favour of Qualcomm, which claimed Apple infringed on a couple of its patents.

Google hopes to move into the new campus by 2020.

As NPR's Jasmine Garsd reports from New York, Amazon's decision "was met with some public trepidation, and questions over what responsibilities big tech companies have toward communities when they move in". And this year it opened new offices and data centres in cities including Detroit; Boulder, Colorado; and Los Angeles, as well as in such states as Tennessee and Alabama.

China's decision came amid a period of heightening tensions between the USA and China over trade and intellectual property issues. The development bodes well for Ford Motor Company and BMW, which export luxury vehicles made from the USA to China.

Google has had an office in NY since 2000. Our investment in NY is a huge part of our commitment to grow and invest in USA facilities, offices and jobs. Google's existing workforce strength in NY is somewhere around 7,000, but the company aims to double the number of Google employees in Big Apple over the course of the next 10 years.
