Demi Lovato tops Google's list of 10 top-trending people of 2018

Google just released its "Year in Search" statistics, and it offers a pretty good glimpse into what was on our collective mind in the Year of our Lord 2018.

What do Stan Lee, Logan Paul, and the royal wedding have in common? While the lists include topics from many fields of endeavor, music-related searches were especially popular this year.

The football fever in India was visible in full glory during the U-17 World Cup in 2017 and thus it was not surprising to see the FIFA World Cup of 2018 feature on top of the list of sports events followed closely by the Indian Premier League at the second spot.

This year in the top 10 overall list, Google revealed that sporting events along with entertainment were the two topics that dominated search queries in India.

Delaying the Brexit vote is a bracing new blow for May, who became prime minister after Britain's 2016 decision to leave the EU. The European Court of Justice is set to rule this morning on whether the United Kingdom can unilaterally revoke Article 50 .

The most searched term globally, however, is World Cup.

Tragedies and disasters were also on people's minds, however. In the US, Demi Lovato, who suffered a drug overdose in July, was the most-searched person; Tristan Thompson was the top-searched athlete amidst a cheating scandal; and the sitcom Roseanne, which ABC cancelled in May following a racist tweet from star Roseanne Barr, was the top-searched TV show. The most-searched movie in the United States was Black Panther, followed by Incredibles 2, Deadpool 2, and Avengers: Infinity War.

On a lighter note, the ever-popular Marvel movies also topped the search charts.

Meanwhile, scandals also made for heavy search volumes.
