Trump Nominates Army Chief Milley to Replace Joint Chiefs Chairman Dunford

After becoming Army chief of staff, Milley helped oversee the Army's transition away from large-scale counterinsurgency campaigns in places like Iraq and Afghanistan, focusing instead on challenges from Russian Federation and China.

Speaking to reporters earlier Friday, Trump hinted an announcement related to the Joint Chiefs of Staff was forthcoming as he unveiled other picks.

President Donald Trump announced Saturday that he would nominate Army Gen. Mark Milley as the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, giving the president a critical opportunity to leave his imprint on the US military by choosing its top officer.

The New York Times first reported on Friday that Trump has picked Milley to replace Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford, whose tenure as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff runs until October 1. "I am thankful to both of these incredible men for their service to our Country!" he said.

The vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs is Air Force Gen. Paul Selva, whose term expires in July 2019.

Sources told Fox News on Friday that Dunford has no plans to end his term as chairman early.

A Princeton-educated Green Beret, Milley has served multiple combat tours in Panama, Iraq and Afghanistan during his 38-year career. On Friday Trump said he is nominating William Barr for attorney general, and Heather Nauert for United Nations ambassador.

Trump will attend the ceremony on Wednesday morning in Washington's National Cathedral along with First Lady Melania. Jim McGrath, spokesman for the Bush family, tweeted a photo on Sunday night, captioning it "mission complete".

Congressional Republicans on Saturday applauded Trump's decision to tap Milley. Trump re-nominated him in 2017 for a second term.

"He has served with General Milley in peacetime and in combat and has the highest regard for his leadership", said Dunford's spokesman, Colonel Patrick Ryder.

Some Pentagon officials expected the Joint Chiefs chairman to be selected from the Air Force, considering the informal rotation among the services.
