Before taking on the role of State Department spokeswoman, Nauert was employed as a Fox News anchor and correspondent.

The Trump administration will reportedly nominate State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert to replace Nikki Haley as ambassador to the United Nations next month. But she has said she would not be running for the top job in 2020, when Trump plans to run for a second term.

Trump will send a tweet on Friday morning about choosing Nauert to replace outgoing UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, who announced her resignation in October, Fox News reported, citing multiple sources.

After Haley announced that she'd be stepping down this past October, several outlets reported that Nauert was expected to be shortlisted for the role.

He added: "She's excellent, she's been with us a long time, she's been a supporter for a long time, really - excellent".

Ms Nauert, 48, was made state department spokeswoman in April 2017, her first government position.

Experience matters less to the President, an avid fan of Fox News, than Nauert's loyalty to the White House, the fact that she's a woman and her ability to be a polished proxy on television, according to sources familiar with his thinking.

Nauert will probably be pressed on her qualifications by Senate Democrats and could face a contentious confirmation hearing, but needs only a simple majority vote to be elevated to the role.

"She would like to go out with something", said a Security Council diplomat of the US-drafted resolution. Haley argued for a Cabinet-level post after, she said, initially being considered for the secretary of state job.

There is some relief at the United Nations that Trump did not pick another name on his short list of candidates: Richard Grenell, the USA ambassador to Germany, is a close ally of Bolton's, having served as U.S. spokesman at the United Nations while Bolton was ambassador there.

In the end, though, it might not matter who is ambassador, Gowan said.

Mr Trump earlier said his daughter, Ivanka, would be ideal for the role but conceded he'd be accused of nepotism if he appointed her.
