Special counsel Robert Mueller has filed a highly-anticipated sentencing memo for Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, the president's former national security adviser, as part of his ongoing investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Prosecutors said in a court filing that Flynn had provided "substantial assistance" in Mueller's probe, including giving "firsthand information about the content and context of interactions between the transition team and Russian government officials".

According to his plea, Flynn discussed US sanctions with Kislyak on Trump's behalf during the presidential transition and said members of the president's inner circle were aware of, and in some cases directing, his efforts.

President Trump lashed out at special counsel Robert Mueller and his own former personal lawyer Michael Cohen on Twitter Monday.

New questions surrounding the case against President Trump's former national security adviser who agreed to plead guilty to making false statements to the Federal Bureau of Investigation; insight from constitutional law attorney Jonathan Turley and Fox News senior judicial analyst Judge Andrew Napolitano.

Cohen has twice pleaded guilty in federal court in Manhattan to a litany of crimes, and he has volunteered information to the special counsel and other agencies investigating Trump and his inner circle. One knowledgeable source said the bulk of Flynn's cooperation with the special counsel occurred immediately following his December court appearance.

Flynn also admitted to making false statements about his work as an unregistered foreign agent to benefit the Turkish government. One knowledgeable source said Flynn's cooperation largely took place immediately following his December 2017 court appearance.

After the plea deal, Trump described Cohen as weak and a liar and said he himself did nothing wrong in relation to the Moscow project. Most notably, Trump's former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, aggressively fought the investigation and is now facing the possibility of a lengthy prison sentence after his cooperation agreement recently fell apart over allegations that he had lied to investigators.

Fed minutes: Further hike "warranted soon", debate opened on pause
That remark had unsettled investors who feared it signaled that the Fed would continue raising rates well into the coming months. For his part, Trump has sought repeatedly to shift blame for any economic troubles to the Fed and its rate increases.

Trump has tweeted in the past in support of Flynn, saying that Mueller had "totally destroyed" his life unfairly.

He has told friends that he is mystified that he is taking the fall for actions he carried out on behalf of Trump, who remains unscathed.

Flynn, who served as Trump's National Security Adviser, was charged with making false statements regarding conversations he had with Russian officials. Van der Zwaan received a 30-day sentence and Papadopoulos got a 14-day sentence.

In a series of tweets on Monday, Trump accused Cohen of co-operating with federal prosecutors in the Russian Federation probe in exchange for a reduced sentence on unrelated tax fraud and campaign finance charges. Flynn "made multiple false statements, to multiple Department of Justice ("DOJ") entities, on multiple occasions".
