New cases of HIV rise in Eastern Europe, decline in the West

Almost 160,000 people were newly diagnosed with HIV in Europe in 2017, the World Health Organization's Regional Office for Europe said in a news release Wednesday, calling the latest figures "alarming".

A new report from the PHA shows that there are 1,073 people in Northern Ireland living with HIV.

"We all need to realize our responsibilities and the critical role we all have to play to make Pakistan HIV free", the minister said while addressing a Seminar in connection with World AIDS Day.

Activists blame widespread discrimination against LGBT+ people for an eight-fold rise in transmission among men having sex with men, to more than 1,000 cases annually.

Meanwhile, the report also found that new HIV diagnoses continued to decline, falling 17% from 5,280 in 2016 to 4,363 in 2017.

Dr. Masoud Dara, coordinator of communicable diseases and HIV team lead at WHO Europe said that we are quite behind in obtaining those targets especially in Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

In 2017, the total number of HIV carriers reached 36.9 mln; 25.7 mln of them live in African countries, the World Health Organization reports. For this reason, all the people should with a possible risk of infection regularly get tested for HIV, even if you feel healthy. Adolescents' vulnerability is also signalled by a region-wide ART coverage rate of just 37 per cent among all people living with HIV over the age of 14, a rate far below the global one of 59 per cent.

He added: "With an estimated 8,000 people still unaware of their infection, it is vital that people seek out an HIV test if they consider themselves at risk, or accept the offer of a HIV test by a healthcare professional, as early diagnosis is key to stopping transmission".

The number of new HIV diagnoses has decreased as treatment rates increase, though efforts still needed to promote early detection. Many countries fail to recognize that raising awareness among young people and offering them better access to early HIV testing are critical.

In the rest of the former Soviet Union, new cases of infected drug users have fallen 45 percent to 6,218 a year in a decade, while new cases of heterosexual transmission increased 59 percent to nearly 18,000.

The Chamber of the capital will launch on Wednesday the campaign "stop HIV is in our hands", with the aim of "increasing the knowledge of the population" regarding the prevention and transmission of the AIDS virus. 31 (41%) new HIV diagnoses were made at a late stage.

The overall trend suggested the European region would not achieve the United Nations target of eliminating HIV/AIDS by 2030.
