His eldest son, George W Bush, went on to become the 43rd USA president.

The statement concludes: "Our hearts ache with his loss, and we, with the American people, send our prayers to the entire Bush family, as we honor the life and legacy of 41".

Bush presided during the collapse of the Soviet Union and the final months of the Cold War.

The elder Bush saw his popularity swell with the United States' success in the Gulf War in 1991, only to watch it evaporate in a brief but deep recession. He was succeeded by Democrat Bill Clinton. "He is preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Barbara".

He referred to his ordering of USA troops to the border in October to install "barbed wire and fencing and various other things". US Customs and Border Protection, which polices the border, said its personnel had been assaulted and hit by stones.
