Hudson-Odoi, one of the most highly-rated youngsters in England, has struggled to gain any notable playing time under manager Maurizio Sarri despite impressing in pre-season, Europa League ties his only current outlet for first team action.

Olivier Giroud scored two first-half goals - taking his tally to four in his last three games - to set the hosts on their way after PAOK had Yevhen Khacheridi shown a straight red card in the seventh minute for tripping the France worldwide just outside the penalty area.

"He played very well, but the type of match was for his characteristics", Sarri said.

"They were down to 10 (men) after seven minutes". He's really very able to do this.

"The thing I like about him is his decision making is good".

This prospect, one which now sees Ruben Loftus-Cheek - who started during the World Cup for England - unable to find a way into Sarri's starting Premier League team, is said to have led Hudson-Odoi to look elsewhere for first-team opportunities.

"If he's already ready now to make a difference in the team like Chelsea, he would be the best player in Europe in two years".

PAOK coach Razvan Lucescu said: "It's normal for everyone to be disappointed about the result, but going down to 10 men after six minutes was very hard for the players". I will keep striving to play for my club. "I could see that working".

Sarri believes a "mental problem" with their approach to matches has hampered Chelsea in recent weeks, culminating in last Saturday's comprehensive loss to rivals Tottenham, and the Italian was particularly satisfied to see a markedly different attitude against PAOK.

"I think he has a feel for the game. The big problem was the team". "I'm very happy with this".

"It wasn't clearly very easy to find a big motivation".
