Mary Kom: From a bullfighter to a smart pugilist

Legendary boxer Mary Kom on Saturday scripted history, becoming India's only six-time world boxing champion after defeating Hanna Okhota of Ukraine.

The first round of the match was a close contest but by midway into the second round, Mary Kom was all over her opponent with powerful hooks with her right hand accompanied by quick jabs from her left. And on October 1, of the same year, the sportswoman won her first Gold Medal at the Asian Games held in South Korea.

Notably, Mary had won a silver on her world championship debut in 2001 and then went on to win the tournament in 2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2018. At 35, Kom showcased her strong defensive skills and counter-attacked with vigour to storm into the final, staying on course for her historic sixth gold medal.

China had an extremely successful final day, winning four gold medals in total. "CONGRATULATIONS! I ever value your BOXING GLOVES that you gifted me! they are MY gold medals", Bachchan wrote on Twitter along with the picture of the autographed boxing gloves.
