New Zealand were in danger of losing the Test today after three quick wickets fell in the space of just 22 runs in the first session with Hasan taking two in the same over.

Pakistan were just four runs away from victory when their last man standing, Azhar Ali, failed to take the team to the other side and fell lbw.

The visitors resumed their incomplete innings with 81 runs on the score board and seven wickets in hand after lunch on day one. Pakistan lost Babar Azam to a run out soon after the lunch break and Sarfraz Ahmed's catastrophic sweep found them reeling at six down. Debutant Ajaz Patel was the pick of the bowlers as he finished with figures of 5 for 59 to help the Kiwis take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Azhar shielded No. 11 batsman Mohammad Abbas for 7.4 overs to get the last precious 12 runs before he was outdone by Patel's guile with Pakistan narrowly falling short.

The 24-year-old dedicated his maiden five-for in Tests to bowling coach Azhar Mahmood.

"We kind of wanted to play that long game and stay in the game as long as possible and that only happens from one ball at a time". "It's a great advertisement for Test cricket that it came down to the wire", New Zealand captain Kane Williamson said. "From our prospective we ended on the right side, we showed the fighting attitude".

Bilal Asif's wild swipe got him bowled on duck, and the next batsmen Yasir Shah and Hasan Ali couldn't add to the scoreboard either, leaving Azhar Ali exclusively in charge of the run-chase with a wicket in hand.

Leg spinner Ish Sodhi removed Mohammad Hafeez (10), miscuing a drive to cover, and Haris Sohail (4), who slapped a full toss back to the bowler later in the same over. "We know Pakistan have got good players of spin, but we kept chipping in there", left-armer Patel said.

Nicholls and Watling stitched a 112-run partnership between them, furthering New Zealand's lead to 146 with their single-minded effort. They were closing in on victory when they traded at [1.01] to win the Test.
