After President Donald Trump announced the firing of Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Wednesday, to be replaced by a person who had been publicly critical of the Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of ties between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation in 2016, Dean called in to CNN to give his opinion.

Mueller is investigating potential links or coordination between Trump's 2016 campaign associates and the Russian government.

Mr Sessions's chief of staff - Matthew Whitaker - has been appointed Acting Attorney-General.

Sessions has served as attorney general since the early days of Trump's administration. Trump has regularly berated the former Attorney General on Twitter, despite Sessions being the first U.S. Senator to endorse him during the 2016 presidential election. "A permanent replacement will be nominated at a later date", Trump said in a follow up post on Twitter.

What are acting attorney general Matthew Whitaker's views on the Mueller investigation?

When asked if he would fire Mueller, as some critics have feared, Trump said, "I could have ended it any time I wanted, [but] I didn't".

A court battle is also likely if the argument is made that Sessions was sacked, nullifying the Vacancies Reform Act's relevance in this case.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of NY said at a news conference in Washington that "protecting Mueller and his investigation is paramount" and it "would create a constitutional crisis if this were a prelude to ending or greatly limiting the Mueller investigation". The resignation comes one day after the midterm elections, in which Republicans gained seats in the Senate but lost control of the House.

Instead, he gave Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein the authority to oversee the probe independently.

But they failed to win the governor's mansions in OH and Florida, two big states where they'd had hopes for marquee victories. Americans are voting for all 435 seats in the House and 35 out of 100 seats in the Senate, a as well as state governors.

Attorney General Sessions submitted his resignation at the request of President Trump.

In August of 2017, Whitaker wrote an opinion piece for CNN that was critical of the Mueller investigation.

The Department of Justice provided Yahoo News with a copy of an undated resignation letter from Sessions to the president.
