Yemen officers: Coalition set for recent assault on key…

On Friday, the coalition said it had attacked ballistic missile and drone sites at the worldwide airport of the Yemeni capital. Since then, a Saudi-led, US -backed coalition supporting the largely exiled government has blockaded the rebel-held north and waged a devastating air campaign, causing thousands of deaths.

United Nations chief Antonio Guterres has demanded an "immediate" halt to fighting in Yemen, as he warned that the country stands on a "precipice" and could face the world's "worst famine" for decades if violence continues unabated.

The UN chief spoke hours after the Saudi-led coalition said it had attacked an airbase in the capital, Sana'a, and fighting flared between the Houthis and the Saudi-led forces near the western port city of al-Hudaydah.

Since the intervention, almost 10,000 civilians have been killed, according to the World Health Organization.

The United States and Britain have called for an end to the conflict, raising pressure on Saudi Arabia as it faces a global outcry over the murder of prominent Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2.

Al-Malki said Saudi air defense forces on Friday shot down a missile launched by Yemeni rebels at the southern Saudi border city of Najran. "Subsequently", Pompeo said, "coalition airstrikes must cease in all populated areas in Yemen".

On Tuesday it was reported that the real death toll in Yemen was likely five times higher than the official count given.
