Turkish media had previously quoted sources as saying Turkey had audio recordings proving that Khashoggi had been tortured before being murdered. So, where is his body?

On Thursday US secretary of State Mike Pompeo said it would be a "handful more weeks" before the US knew enough to impose sanctions on individuals involved in Khashoggi's killing.

The body of journalist Jamal Khashoggi was "dissolved" after he was murdered and dismembered in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul a month ago, an advisor to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Friday.

Khashoggi, a Saudi national working for the United States press, was a well-known critic of his home country's rulers.

Officials in the Trump administration have discussed proposals like urging King Salman, the 82-year-old father of the crown prince, to appoint a strong prime minister or other senior official to help oversee day-to-day governance or foreign policy, according to three officials familiar with the deliberations.

The claim echoed what a Turkish official had told the Washington Post - for which Khashoggi was a contributor - that authorities are investigating a theory the body was destroyed in acid.

The official was cited as saying that "biological evidence" found in the consulate's garden indicated the body was likely disposed of near where Khashoggi was killed.

"We have requested information from Saudi officials regarding the whereabouts of Jamal Khashoggi's body and the identity of the supposed local collaborator".

"When officials of our government are asked about consequences for Jamal's murder, they often talk about "balancing our interests in the area, '" he said".

Some officials at the State Department however said they are considering a range of disciplinary measures, including a demand to end the Saudi-led blockade of Qatar or wind down the war in Yemen.

MbS, Saudi Arabia's de facto leader, said: "The incident that happened is very painful".

Turkish police first searched the consulate and the Saudi consul general's residence, then hunted for evidence in a vast forest on the fringes of Istanbul. That was seven days after the dissident disappeared in the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul and long before the crown prince acknowledged that Saudi agents killed him.

Turkish investigators have also used a robotic arm to inspect the sewers around the consulate.

"It is now up to the worldwide community to bring the perpetrators to justice". Turkey wants the suspects to be extradited.

And even though Riyadh already confirmed that the journalist was indeed killed and his body 'disappeared, ' the United States administration is still trying to determine individual figures it could blame and punish.
