After two patchy - but winning - performances this week over three sets, Federer finally showed the game befitting a 20-time Grand Slam champion.

In the semifinals, Nishikori will meet Kazakhstani qualifier Mikhail Kukushkin, who battled back to survive Hungary's Marton Fucsovics 4-6, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4) in a 3-hour, 17-minute marathon.

Copil dropped to 0-2 in career finals, also losing this year in the championship match at Sofia.

"But I kept my cool and got the job done".

His qualification means there are two places still up for grabs ahead of the Paris Masters, with Croatian Marin Cilic, Austrian Dominic Thiem, Nishikori and American John Isner still in the race.

The CIA had no comment on a Washington Post report that Haspel had listened to audio purportedly capturing Khashoggi's killing. The Turkish president had earlier urged that all those behind the murder should be brought to justice and tried in Istanbul .

Federer dominated the 20th-ranked Medvedev and had his first match-point chance to break serve again at 5-1. "I was a bit unsure of my serve and his return is excellent", said Federer.

"I played quite good tennis, it was an awesome week", he said.

Federer, 37, spent nearly 90 minutes less on court Saturday than Copil, who has had to come through six matches to reach his second career ATP final.

The 37-year-old delighted his home support to land his ninth Swiss Indoors title, winning 7-6 (7-5) 6-4.

He traded breaks with Federer before the local hero snaffled the tiebreak seven points to five.

I will keep fighting for the team because we have a great squad here and great staff to help us to learn and improve our game. I know I always have a good relationship with you but my feeling is not the best feeling.

The Swiss crowd favourite was never able to comfortably take command against an opponent whom he had defeated in their last six meetings.

"It's very hard for me to explain how it feels like".

Just as Federer looked to be settling into form after almost 30 unforced errors in the opening set, more disruption ensued.

Second seed Zverev was beaten 6-3 6-7 (6-8) 6-4 by Copil in the first match of the day.

The 32nd-ranked Simon continued to make the match a struggle, with the pair trading four breaks in a row until Federer took a 4-3 lead.

Pearce gave Boston a 2-0 lead they would never relinquish with a two-run blast in the first and added a solo shot in the eighth. Minor league success was nothing new to Palka - he hit 34 home runs over two levels in the Twins system as recently as 2016.

It is Zverev's 52nd win of the season and a ninth semi-final spot for the world number five, who has already qualified for the season-ending ATP Finals in London next month.
