An eighth child has died at a New Jersey rehabilitation center where 23 people have been infected in a deadly viral outbreak, state health officials said on Friday.

The patient was one of 25 sickened by an outbreak of a respiratory virus called adenovirus, which swept through Wanaque between September 26 and October 22, mainly affecting patients in the pediatric ventilator unit. The department can not confirm that the death of an individual who died Friday afternoon was related to the outbreak, officials said.

The for-profit facility has a pediatric centre and also cares for elderly residents.

The death on Sunday at Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Haskell, New Jersey, was reported over the weekend by the New Jersey Department of Health.

"This is a tragic situation, and our thoughts are with the families who are grieving right now", Health Commissioner Dr. Shereef Elnahal said.

He added: "The department continues to work very closely with the facility to ensure that all infection control measures are being followed". The infections can affect the tissue linings of the respiratory tract, eyes, intestines, urinary tract and nervous system, causing illnesses ranging from a cold to bronchitis to pneumonia to pink eye.

The facility has since stopped admitting new residents as long as the outbreak is ongoing.

"The facility has agreed to cease new admissions for the duration of the outbreak", the department said.

Weary Dodgers Fans Celebrate Historic World Series Win
Trouble at the top: The top four spots in the Red Sox lineup were a combined 0-for-28 with 12 strikeouts and two walks. The longtime Dodgers closer has three blown saves and an extra-inning loss during the past two World Series.

Adenovirus usually poses little risk for healthy people.

The state health department has sent a team of investigators to the facility to determine the cause of the outbreak. "The strain has been particularly associated with disease in communal living arrangements and can be more severe", the department said in a statement.

Adenoviruses, of which there are 52 different strains, are common causes of respiratory illnesses and most infections aren't severe, according to the CDC.

The viruses themselves are also "resistant to many common disinfectants and can remain infectious for long periods on environmental surfaces and medical instruments", the CDC says.
