Hurricane Oscar: to intensify further, cause rough seas in Bermuda

The Atlantic hurricane season ends on November 30 and usually peaks in mid-September.

Hurricane Oscar continues to churn and strengthen slightly in the central Atlantic Ocean, but it is not expected to be a threat to land.

That result would allow the current state government of the CDU and Greens to continue, albeit with a thinner majority. But the CDU and ecologist Greens may lack sufficient support to renew their ruling alliance in the state.


The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Oscar was centered Monday morning about 620 miles (1,000 kilometers) southeast of Bermuda, with top sustained winds of about 80 mph (130 kph). There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect.

At press time, the National Hurricane Center forecast for the storm system put the likelihood of it developing into a tropical cyclone during the next 48 hours at 90 percent. "Storms that form in November, whether they develop in the Caribbean or over the western Atlantic, usually track to the northeast toward the open waters of the western and central Atlantic", the blog noted.

The Bermuda Weather Service said the storm was moving west at about 19.5 mph with winds of more than 64 mph and gusts of 79 mph.

The system is expected to move generally northward during the next couple of days, according to the forecast.
