Michael is the strongest hurricane to strike the Florida Panhandle on record and the strongest storm to make landfall in the continental USA since Hurricane Andrew, which struck in 1992.

"There is unbelievable devastation", Florida Governor Rick Scott said on CNN.

"So many lives have been changed forever".

State officials said the high volume of phone calls from outside the disaster area could be due to the fact that vast swaths of the Panhandle remain without cellphone service.

Hurricane Michael hit Florida on Wednesday just shy of a category 5. Rows and rows of other homes were turned into piles of splintered lumber or were crumpled and slumped at odd angles. A neighbor told McCall that all the docks in the area were destroyed and many people are stuck in their homes as the roads have been blocked with debris. State officials said 285 people in Mexico Beach had refused to leave ahead of the hurricane despite a mandatory evacuation order.

While we might not get more storms in a warmer climate, most studies show storms will get stronger and produce more rain. Nine people had to be rescued by helicopter from a bathroom of a home in hard-hit Panama City after their roof collapsed, Petty Officer 3rd Class Ronald Hodges said. Though most homes were still standing, no property was left undamaged. Downed power lines and twisted street signs lay all around. Roofs were peeled away and sent airborne. The damage there consisted mostly of fallen trees.

Hundreds of cars had broken windows. Pine trees were stripped and snapped off about 6m high.

In neighboring Panama City Beach, Bay County Sheriff Tommy Ford reported widespread looting of homes and businesses.
