Storm Callum is on its way

Wicklow is one of the coastal counties that has been issued with an orange weather warning ahead of Storm Callum and residents are being asked to exercise caution as the storm advances.

Today's unseasonably warm weather will be replaced by the strong winds and heavy rain felt at the beginning of the week as we head into Friday and Saturday.

The Met Office said there will be strong winds and rainfall up to 10cm, leading to possible flooding and hard driving conditions.

The main impacts for the United Kingdom will be from heavy rain across some western areas on Friday and Saturday, with yellow Met Office weather warnings for wind and rain now in place for Friday and Saturday.

The Met Office has warned that homes and offices are likely to be flooded, and fast flowing or deep floodwater could cause a danger to life.

There are also risks of coastal flooding, and the warning is in place from 10pm Thursday until 12pm Friday.

"Areas of high ground exposed to the south and south west will be most affected, with the potential for 50-80mm in 12 hours, and a chance of over 120mm in a few spots".

Richard Brown, Pembrokeshire County Council's Head of Environmental Services and Public Protection, said that although Council staff would be working continuously to clear the roads, motorists would need to be vigilant.

Winds of 50mph will batter Northern Ireland, southwest England and west Wales during Thursday night, spreading to Scotland by Friday morning.

Cllr John Campbell says areas of South Donegal which have been prone to flooding in the past owing to high tides could still be vulnerable. Expect the unexpected. Watch out for falling/fallen debris on the road and vehicles veering across the road.

Train services between Swansea and Carmarthen are being suspended during parts of Friday because of Storm Callum.

The Met Office Amber Warning for rain is in place from 6am to midnight on Friday.

On Friday Storm Callum hit bringing across northern and western Britain strong winds and for many areas a prolonged spell of wet weather throughout Friday and Saturday.

"We are advising people to avoid coastal areas during this event".

Director Stephen Stewart said: "Even though power cuts are rare, during times of heavy rain and flooding they become more likely".
