Trump orders new Federal Bureau of Investigation probe of Kavanaugh

His ire was reserved for Democrats, whom he accused of "search and destroy" tactics.

The judge, however, has "unequivocally and categorically" denied Dr Ford's allegation and called himself a victim of "grotesque and obvious character assassination".

"I'm innocent. I'm innocent of this charge", Kavanaugh said.

The news website Axios quoted a well-known, but unnamed, Democratic strategist on Friday as saying that among the minority Democratic party, if Kavanaugh gets confirmed, it's "only question is who calls for it [impeachment] first".

"As a recovering alcoholic and a cancer survivor, I have struggled with depression and anxiety", his letter said. Republicans have also refused to subpoena Mark Judge, who Ford says was with Kavanaugh when the alleged assault took place.

The federal judge actually cried as he described the toll the allegations have taken on his parents, his wife, and his ten-year-old daughter, repeating that none of them harbor any "ill will" for Ford or her family.

Ford gave a soft-spoken and steady account about what she said happened three decades ago in a bedroom at a small gathering of friends. "And I believe many Americans across the country believe you". She showed no hesitancy in affirming the crucial question about the alleged incident, telling senators her certainty that Kavanaugh was her attacker was "100 per cent". When Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota asked if he ever drank so much he blacked out, he snapped, "Have you?"

"I expected it to be a day where we had nothing but losers", Wallace said. Hume liked how Kavanaugh fought back.

Others, however, pointed out that the judge had a right to be angry if he does believe the accusations are false.

As of Saturday, the FBI has begun contacting people as part of the background investigation of Kavanaugh. "I planned to, but I did not, I was preparing mine". Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., led the way with a scorching denunciation of Democrats for raising the allegations against Kavanaugh in the final days of the confirmation process.

"What you want to do is destroy this guy's life, hold his seat open and hope you win in 2020", he said, referring to that year's presidential election. He evaded questions about calling for an FBI investigation and proclaimed that "you'll never get me to quit".

Mitchell's attempt to draw out a counter-narrative - mainly that Ford was coordinating with Democrats - was disrupted by the panel's decision to allow alternating five-minute rounds of questions from Democratic senators. "The vile threats of violence against my family will not drive me out", Kavanaugh said addressing the Democrats. South Carolina Republican Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-California) kept Ford's letter secret for weeks, and failed to inform them of allegations through proper committee procedure even as her staff was instructing Ford to lawyer up and leaked it to the press.

"Those who say that do not know me", she said. When it was needed, this allegation was unleashed and publicly deployed over Dr. Ford's wishes. She said she came forward not for political reasons, but because it was her "civic duty". Neither did her staff, she maintained.

Casting aside the norms of decorum that have traditionally characterized such Senate hearings - norms that Kavanaugh had largely adhered to during his earlier appearances - the nominee appeared unconstrained as he expressed clear hostility toward Democratic members.

The ABC is funded by public money, but has its editorial independence protected by a legislated charter, the BBC said. The government didn't respond to a report in March, but Mr Oquist said a debate on the issue is bound to happen now.

Wrapping up the eight-hour session, Sen. "I'll be voting against him".

None, Kavanaugh replied. "I swear to God".

In Mr Kavanaugh's angry and tearful opening statement, supporters saw an expression of the frustration Republicans have felt since he was nominated by USA president Donald Trump in July.

After Donald Trump nominated Brett Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court, the American Bar Association does what it almost always does: it offered its assessment of the jurist's professional qualifications.

Democrats' tactics were "the most unethical sham", he said in a fiery speech. "There should be no vote in the Senate". Ford also during her sworn testimony that she was "100 percent" certain that it was Kavanaugh who attacked her.
