Passenger plane lands in ocean after overshooting runway

A passenger plane carrying 47 people crashed into sea this morning after missing the runway of a remote Pacific island.

A video posted on Facebook shows multiple fishing boats sailing towards the aircraft to pick up the stranded passengers.

"I thought, well, this is not like the way it's supposed to happen", he said.

All 36 passengers and 11 crew members onboard...

Air Niugini is the national airline of Papua New Guinea and has been in operation since 1973.

"Air Niugini can confirm that all on board were able to safely evacuate the aircraft", the statement continued.

The cause of Friday's accident was not immediately known.

Passengers can be seen evacuating the submerged aircraft.

But it said it had been informed that "the weather was very poor with heavy rain and reduced visibility at the time of incident".

The Air Niuguini plane crashed on approach to Chuuk Airport in the Federated States of Micronesia.

There was also a 2013 Lion Air flight that overshot the runway and ended up in water when attempting to land at Denpasar, with all on board rescued by small boats.

"Right now we don't really know what happened". Initial reports indicate the flight was arriving and landed in the water.

The PNG Accident Investigation Commission was sending a team to the accident site, the ABC reported.

John Merelli, who works at a hotel on the island, said local people helped with the rescue effort within minutes of the crash.

Air Niugini's network is concentrated on domestic routes linking the capital, Port Moresby, with isolated points across the Papua New Guinea archipelago.
