FOR the first time in 1876 days, Tiger Woods has tasted a tour victory.

Woods won the season-ending Tour Championship by two shots to claim his first victory since August 2013 in the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.

Billy Horschel, Patrick Cantlay and Jon Rahm sit on four under alongside Thomas, with overnight joint-leader Rickie Fowler a further stroke back after a two-over 72. "It's just hard to believe I won the Tour Championship".

Rose birdied the 18th at East Lake for a 73 to seal the top-five finish he needed to win the $10 million (£7.6 million) bonus on offer as FexEx Cup champion.

Woods was in position to nab his third-ever FedEx Cup trophy, but Rose's clutch birdie on the final hole gave him the edge.

Clearly, winning the tournament was more important to Woods.

"I was having a hard time not crying on that last hole. If I can make two fours there, I'm all of a sudden seven-under instead of five-under and probably in the last group". Woods holds a three-shot lead over Justin Rose and Rory McIlroy heading into Sunday's final round.

"It's going to be a special week and with Patrick (Reed) and I playing together today we were talking about it and it's going to be a fun and exciting week". Not knowing what was on the other side.

"But somehow I've been able to do that, and here we are".

"It's obviously exciting for the tournament, it's exciting for golf in general that he's up there but for me, all I can do is concentrate on myself. It's been a very evolving kind of feeling and journey".

Once hailed the second coming to Woods, McIlroy will get a chance to chase down the 14-time major champion while playing alongside him. He finished second at East Lake and outlasted his pal Jordan Spieth for the top prize. Woods received the loudest roar from his gallery by holing a 24-foot birdie putt on the par-three 15th.

As he tapped in for the win, he raised his hands and grinned, then hugged McIlroy and his caddie, Joe LaCava, as the crowd chanted "U-S-A", a nod to the Ryder Cup next week and a release for the crowd.

The victory was nothing like the clinical finishes during Woods' world-beating prime, but he has maintained a ideal record when holding a 54-hole lead of more than two shots.

"Beginning of the year, that was a tall order (expecting to win) but as the year progressed I proved I could play", he said. I knew Tiger had driven it way down the fairway behind.
