FDA Recognizes New Apple Watch as Medical Device

The new S4 processor which drives the whole Watch now pops out easily; Apple's practice has historically been to glue down many of its processors.

We know you're curious just how radically redesigned the lovely new smartwatch is on the inside, but leave it to iFixit's experts to offer you a complete look under the 44 mm hood of the larger 2018 variant.

According to Apple's support page for the Watch Series 4, the Fall Detection feature will be automatically be switched on for users who set up an account on the Watch or the Health app by listing their age as 65 years or older. Otherwise, younger Watch owners will have to adjust this setting given that the corresponding default will be "off". With Fall Detection enabled, the watch will be able to detect falls and offer automatic assistance. This may suggest that the feature could still require some further refinement to avoid false positives being triggered when used by the general population in varying scenarios.

The fact that it is disabled by default for most users was first reported by Reddit user No1ARSoul.

It's not clear why Apple made a decision to disable fall detection by default for users under 65.

Overall, the iFixit team gave the Apple Watch Series 4 a repairability score of 6 out of 10, which is the same as the iPhone XS series. If an Apple Watch Series 4 wearer falls, but doesn't move for a minute, a 15-second countdown begins. Many reported that they could not trigger a fall alert on objective, but it's not clear if all of them had the feature turned on.

The iFixit teardown showed iPhone Xs and Xs Max used Intel's modem and communication chips instead of Qualcomm's hardware. The new iPhone XS is backed by a 2,658mAh battery , whereas its predecessor the iPhone X consisted a 2,716mAh battery.

The iFixit team has managed to get its hands on the Apple Watch Series 4 and posted a detailed teardown of the wearable. The Apple Watch Series 4 now boasts a 291.8mAh battery, which is 4 percent bigger than its previous model of 42mm. The same sensor has a dedicated cutout beside the microphone on the Series 3.

The Apple Watch Series 4 is priced at $399 for the Global Positioning System version.
