Doug Ducey (R) announced Tuesday that former Sen.

Grant Woods gives a tribute during a memorial service for late senator John McCain (R-Ariz.), on August 30 at North Phoenix Baptist Church in Phoenix. At that time, Arizona voters will pick the person who will serve out McCain's term, which runs through 2022.

Kyl has only committed to fill the seat until the end of the current congressional session on January 3.

"With almost two decades of experience in the Senate serving along side John McCain, Senator Kyl is prepared to hit the ground running", Ducey said.

Not only is Ducey a pro-Trump Republican, he has been ushering Brett Kavanaugh through the Supreme Court confirmation process, and will now get a vote on his nomination.

Kyl said he chose to return to the Senate because of his sense of duty "to the state I love", adding, "I'm putting my country first just as this seat's previous occupant did every single day".

Asked about a past remark expressing concern about Trump, Kyl replied, "I stand by that comment".

Over the course of the past five seasons, a 13 win season has been able to wrap up that top spot in the NFC four times. The hardest part for me is, obviously, you lose a good football player, but he's my brother, man.

"Senator Kyl is prepared to hit the ground running".

McCain died August 25 of brain cancer.

"Now, senator Kyl can cast a vote for Kavanaugh's confirmation".

"John Kyl is a dear friend of mine and John's", Cindy McCain tweeted. He was member of the House of Representative before that (from 1987 to 1995).

Veteran Republican consultant and former McCain aide Doug Cole called Kyl a good, safe pick.

Cindy McCain, John McCain's widow, tweeted Tuesday that Kyle "is a dear friend of mine and John's".

Ducey indicated Tuesday that he would like Kyl to serve until the 2020 special election.

If the charges end up being dropped as a result of Trump's tweet, then Toobin would have a stronger argument. He said the DOJ would have been " most unwise" to wait until after the midterms to issue these indictments.

One of his first tasks will be to vote in President Donald Trump's nominee for United States Supreme Court, Brett Kavanaugh. Jeff Flake, who is stepping down at the end of the year, succeeded Kyl in the Senate.

Ducey's choice of Kyl comes after an emotional week.

"It's my hope that he serves longer".

Jon Kyl's appointment to the Senate, the latest chapter in a period of political uncertainty that's nevertheless a new experience for most Arizonans - at least when it comes to the relative stability of its senators.

"John McCain was an American hero and we were very blessed to have him as a senator", Ducey said at a press conference.

The ex-senator said he was willing to serve through at least the end of the current Congress "to make sure that the business that is now ongoing is taken care of". ". There is no replacing John McCain, but the law requires me to do it".

If he remains through 2020, he could face a vote on repealing the Affordable Care Act, which the GOP failed to scuttle in 2017 largely because of McCain's thumbs-down. Those who know Kyl say that he is more likely to be a bridge-builder than a Trump antagonist along the lines of McCain, Flake or Ben Sasse, R-Neb.

Kyl will be entering a narrowly divided senate where Republicans could gain or lose seats in November.
