Her victory comes just two months after Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez similarly defeated a top House leader in a primary for a NY congressional seat. "I'm just as upset as they are, but so be it", Capuano told supporters.

"I'm influenced by my lived experience, but also the people I listen to and work with every day", she said.

Ayanna Pressley, Democratic candidate for Congress, records a speech for her social media followers encouraging them to go out and vote at the Mildred Middle School and Community Center in Boston, that served as a polling station for primary election on September 4, 2018.

Unlike Ocasio-Cortez, Pressley did not argue that Capuano was too moderate.

Pressley and other insurgents have drawn the attention of new voters whose support Democrats will need again, said María Urbina, national political director of Indivisible, a nationwide network that formed a year ago to resist Trump.

"This is a fight for the soul of our party".

Pressley said the two would vote the same - but that their styles would be different. "These times require and this district deserves bold, activist leadership".

Pressley had the endorsement of Ocasio-Cortez, whose victory in NY this summer prompted Democratic National Committee chairman Tom Perez to declare her "the future of our party", as the party shifts leftward from the watery managerialism of Hillary Clinton and her ilk.

Facing an uncontested general election for the district in November, Pressley, 44, is set to become the first woman of color to serve MA in Congress.

She will head to Congress to represent the 7th District of MA, the Boston-area district once represented by John F. Kennedy.

"It seems like change is on the way", Pressley told her supporters to rousing applause Tuesday night. "It runs the gamut". "I do not think it is an agency that can be reformed from the inside-out", Pressley said of ICE. Pressley, though, was already a well-known figure in MA politics, and the race was seen as close and competitive for months.

If recent upset victories for left-wing candidates in New York, Florida, Pennsylvania, and now MA are any evidence, this movement to oust the old guard of the Democratic Party and usher in young, ambitious progressives willing to challenge the traditional boundaries of American politics is rapidly gaining steam.

Another veteran congressman, Democratic Rep. Richard Neal, faced a spirited primary challenge from Tahirah Amatul-Wadud, a black attorney from Springfield who, if elected, would be the first Muslim to serve in Congress from MA.

The race focused on Massachusetts' voting laws: Galvin highlighted changes that modernized the laws early in his tenure.
