Brisbane-born John Millman, unseeded and largely unheralded, defeated second-seed and all-time great Roger Federer in four sets a short time ago.

It was most striking during Lesia Tsurenko's 6-7 (3), 7-5, 6-2 win against Marketa Vondrousova, in which both players seemed affected by the temperature and mugginess.

It's only the second time in Federer's past 14 appearances at the US Open that he has lost before the quarterfinals.

He improved to 28-0 at the U.S. Open against opponents ranked outside the top 50, and here's another reason it wasn't all that surprising the way things went: Djokovic is now 5-0 against Sousa, taking all 14 sets they've played against each other.

There was little sign of what was in store for the five-times champion when he took the first set easily, before world No. 55 Millman turned the tables to win the second then held his nerve through two tiebreaks to secure the victory in three hours and 34 minutes.

Xi Jinping offers $60 bn Africa aid
The opening ceremony followed a series of engagements by the President, including his meeting with some Nigerians living in China. Xi said China would set up a China-Africa peace and security fund and continue providing free military aid to the African Union.

Asked Monday whether he thought during that time away about returning to the height of his powers, Djokovic replied: "I have imagined".

"I've got a lot of respect for Roger".

Sousa, who got past 12th-seeded Pablo Carreno Busta and No. 17 Luca Pouille to become the first Portugese man to reach a Grand Slam last 16, was irked by the chair umpire's refusal to allow a line call challenge in the seventh game of the final set.

The Australian is ranked No 55 in the world and for his heroics will be rewarded by a quarters clash against Novak Djokovic.

Federer tore through the opening set in 33 minutes and served for the second at 5-4, before Millman saved two set points to level at 5-5.

Serena Williams moves past Kaia Kanepi at U.S. Open
When asked whether Williams was playing as well as the 33-year-old Kanepi had ever seen, the Estonian's response was simple. Kanepi was matching Williams' power with booming groundstrokes of her own. "I'm surprised it hasn't come down to a 10".

Djokovic has sweated his way to a 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 fourth round win over Joao Sousa as the heat returned to the US Open. Keys advanced by beating No. 29 Dominika Cibulkova 6-1, 6-3.

He will next face No. 7 seed Marin Cilic who ousted No. 10 seed David Goffin 7-6 (6), 6-2, 6-4.

Keys lost to Sloane Stephens in last year's final, and also lost to Stephens again this year in the French Open semifinals.

"Felt like a deer in the headlights to begin with, to be honest", he said courtside.

Millman pulled off the historic upset over Federer in their fourth round matchup, 3-6 7-5 7-6 (9-7) 7-6 (7-3) to reach the quarter finals of the singles tournament, the first time in his entire career Millman has reached the final stages of a Grand Slam event.
