A superb race from Lewis Hamilton saw him win the Italian Grand Prix where he rose to the challenge and Sebastian Vettel who needed to take his chance could only come home in fourth.

The Brit and his closest title rival Sebastian Vettel who's now 30 points behind, collided on the opening lap with the German Ferrari driver sent spinning down to 18th place before recovering to 4th.

Hamilton then followed the other Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen closely before passing him nine laps before the end of the race.

The thrilling victory was a fifth in a row for Mercedes at Monza. "Then I was the one who spun around, which was ironic". "We got a lot of points so it could be a lot worse today". I left him room.

"Well I think you had more angles than I had but I tried to pass Kimi and then he put on the brakes and then I didn't really have a gap and I didn't want to try something silly", Vettel said.

Hamilton said he had already been "a bit surprised" that Vettel went to the left at the first chicane, where "there was a small touch between us all" and was surprised by his approach to the Roggia too.

The pair clashed at the Italian Grand Prix, with Hamilton going on to win, while Vettel's misjudgment in hitting the Mercedes driver meant he could finish only fourth.

"I was surprised when I got out", said Vettel.

"I think it was 100% Sebastian's fault". I'm sure you can always look at the data and see there's a little bit more but of course I'm pushing the vehicle as hard as I can and I'm really happy with the performance, really, this weekend.

"We couldn't have imagined we would have that kind of lead", Hamilton said. Racing resumed on lap four as the stewards announced they were taking no action, declaring it a "racing incident".
