Bishop was eliminated in the first round of voting having received the fewest votes and on Sunday announced her resignation as the minister for foreign affairs.

The leader in the Australian's Liberal Party has been named as the new Prime Minster, reports said.

Mr Morrison's most hard task will be mending the deep rift in the Liberal party before an election, which is due in the first half of 2019.

"Our job ... is to ensure that we not only bring our party back together, which has been bruised and battered this week, but that will enable us to ensure we bring the parliament back together", Morisson said in his first address as Prime Minister.

A moderate, she reportedly garnered only 11 votes out of 85 in the leadership ballot - significantly lower than the two other rightwing challengers, coup instigator Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton and Treasurer Scott Morrison. His replacement, Scott Morrison, is the country's sixth PM since John Howard's defeat in the 2007 general election.

The American Peter Dutton found himself caught in the crossfire of Australian politics recently and has been having fun with the case of mistaken identity.

"I'm sure many of us, especially my female colleagues, will look to her as a great support", Morrison said, adding that Bishop had strongly recommended Payne to take over her position.

Dutton, who had stepped down as Home Affairs Minister in the lead up to his initial challenge, has been reappointed as Homes Affairs Minister but has lost the Immigration portfolio which will now be handled by David Coleman.

Australia's Julie Bishop has resigned as foreign minister and will return to the backbench as the fallout from Friday's dumping of Malcolm Turnbull as prime minister continues. Frydenberg will also serve as Treasurer.

Morrison has a one-seat majority, but will face a by-election when Turnbull resigns from parliament, which ABC news reported could be as early as later this week.

"Well, when we find one, I'm sure we will", said Ms Bishop.
