Presidents and USA politicians from both parties have honoured Senator John McCain's decades of service to his country following his death at the age of 81. VA officials offered their sympathy to the McCain family.

Near the driveway to his ranch in Sedona, Arizona, a sign read "Sen McCain, thank you for your service". His family and friends will be in our prayers.

Asked how he wanted to be remembered, McCain said simply: "That I made a major contribution to the defense of the nation". But we shared, for all our differences, a fidelity to something higher - the ideals for which generations of Americans and immigrants alike have fought, marched, and sacrificed.

McCain's two losing presidential campaigns meant he fell short of the ultimate political prize, one his story once seemed to promise after he came home from Vietnam and caught the political bug. Character. Courage. Integrity. Honour.

"A life lived embodying those truths casts a long, long shadow". But certainly John McCain should be recognized in some way. John Loved America: his impact will forever endure. "He loved me, and I loved him", she wrote.

The rise of Trump's populist candidacy in 2016 was widely seen as a disavowal of McCain-style Republicanism and of the more establishment approach he took during his own presidential run in 2008. John McCain was a maverick and a fighter, never afraid to stand for his beliefs. Other potential contenders include Ducey chief of staff Kirk Adams, former ambassador to Finland Barbara Barrett, and former Sen.

"John McCain was my friend". But I would not trade a day of my life, in good or bad times, for the best day of anyone else's. "With the Senator when he passed were his wife Cindy and their family".
