Death of Lancashire couple on holiday 'not due to gas emissions'

On Tuesday, John Cooper, 69, died in his hotel room at the five-star Steigenberger Aqua Magic Hotel in Hurghada. We are aware of the speculation in some of today's media that their deaths may have been caused by carbon monoxide poisoning.

There was "no reason" to suspect the deaths were of a "criminal nature", the officials said.

Local officials said on Friday both deaths were from heart failure, but Egypt's public prosecutor said the cause was still not yet clear.

According to various reports, 301 tourists have been evacuated from the Steigenberger Aqua Magic hotel in Hurghada following the death of two tourists.

It said the hotel was last audited late last month and received an overall score of 96%.

Mr Cooper suffered a "circulatory collapse" and died at the hotel.

The 44-year-old, who flies home on Friday evening, told the Press Association: "The food is just disgusting, it's undercooked. I went to hospital in the ambulance with mum where she passed away", she said.

About 100 holidaymakers at an Egyptian hotel where a British couple fell ill and died have returned early to to the UK, Thomas Cook said, as claims circulated of food poisoning and poor hygiene standards.

She was taken to hospital after passing blood and being sick every time she ate something in the hotel.

But Thomas Cook said the circumstances around their deaths were still unclear, when ruling out the poisonous gas as a possible factor.

Sven Hirschler, senior director of corporate communications for Deutsche Hospitality, which owns the Steigenberger brand, said there was not an unusual level of illness among the 1,600 guests staying at the hotel.

The spokesman added on Thursday night: "For those customers who choose to come home, we have made arrangements to fly them back tomorrow, August 24".

"While we understand this is upsetting for those on holiday, we believe this is the right thing to do.

We are urgently investigating with the hotel and supporting the local authorities".

"Half the time we don't know what it is and can't eat it because it's raw in the middle".
