The crash killed Heitmann as well as a 43-year-old woman and a 12-year-old girl in a sedan he hit.

California Highway Patrol told the Los Angeles Times that the accident involved nearly a dozen vehicles and shut down traffic on the northbound lane of I-805.

The online star, who called himself McSkillet, was reportedly driving faster than 100mph when his £200,000 McLaren sports vehicle crashed head-on into an SUV, killing its driver and passenger.

The Medical Examiner's Office confirmed the ages of the other two victims, both of whom were from San Diego, on Friday.

A spokesperson for California Highway Patrol said: "At this point I don't have anything to clarify why or what possible made him do what he did, whether he was under the influence at the time, whether he was having any other issues".

The crash occurred on a freeway in San Diego shortly after 4:30 pm local time Thursday.

Heitmann was known by online gaming fans as "McSkillet", who watched him play the first-person shooter "Counter-Strike: Global Offensive" on video streaming sites such as YouTube.

McSkillet's channel had close to 900,000 subscribers, and he'd posted a video there showing off his black McLaren in December.

Witnesses told police the 18-year-old was driving the wrong way down a busy highway at 160km/h when his McLaren sports auto hit another vehicle.
