Spokane's air quality improves to unhealthy for some groups

A new app, "Sh**t I Smoke!", created by Brazilian designer Marcelo Coelho and French app developer Amaury Martin, converts the air quality to the equivalent number of cigarettes that would be smoked to get the same result in human lungs.

The deteriorating air quality has prompted Environment Canada to issue yet another advisory.

Environment Canada said the index for Calgary was calculated as a 10 - very high risk - at 4 a.m., but it had dropped to 7 - high risk - by 8 a.m.

Also, subtropical storms are cold-core weather systems, while tropical storms and hurricanes are warm-core. Additionally, most of the storms associated with the system are far from the center.

But sites at Neah Bay, Port Angeles, Lacey and and Oak Harbor all were reporting much-improved air quality Thursday morning, on the fifth straight day of smoky skies and record high temperatures for much of Western Washington.

Above and beyond the wildfires of Southern and Central Oregon and California, smoke from fires as far north as Washington and British Columbia has moved in to blanket the state.

Breathing in smoke from forest fires can be unsafe for everyone, especially sensitive groups such as people with heart or lung disease.

"We're concerned ... that this may well be the new normal", he said.

After a brief reprieve from the thick wildfire smoke, another shift in the winds is sending the air quality levels back to extreme values across Alberta and parts of Saskatchewan.

One man says he hasn't been suffering that much, but has family and friends who are having a hard time. The reduced visibility also posed a problem for crews working to bring the wildfires under control.

"They added a script real quick this morning to make sure this didn't happen again", he said. The Shovel Lake fire is considered to be the highest-priority of the 451 wildfires above 0.009 hectares in size burning in B.C.as of Tuesday morning.

Canadian Armed Forces troops have been deployed to B.C. during the floods and wildfires this year, as well as for fires in 2017.

In regards to Taiwan, the reports warns that China "is likely preparing for a contingency to unify Taiwan with China by force". China had also landed bombers on islands and reefs in the disputed South China Sea during a training exercise this year.

"They're both holding within containment lines", he said.
