Nobody has a better scoring average Saturday on the PGA Tour than Tiger Woods, and the Bridgestone Invitational would be a good time to keep that up.

"I'm glad I finally played well around here", said Thomas, who claimed his first victory in an elite World Golf Championships event on a course where hasn't fared so well in the past.

The trio made the most of flawless morning scoring conditions, finishing the second round on 11-under 129, two strokes in front of American Kyle Stanley, who carded a 68 and Australian Jason Day, who produced a four-under 66 in the afternoon.

He was at 14-under 196, three shots clear of Rory McIlroy (67) and Ian Poulter (70).

Thomas, who defends his title next week in the PGA Championship, goes after his third victory of the season, but first in five months.

"Now this is our last go-around here at Firesetone for a while".

"I just haven't really had the results or the score to (reflect) it".

"I like to hit driver as much as possible and this course allows me to do that", he said. "I felt a little bit more sharp, or a little bit more so than I did yesterday".

Largely sidelined by years of back trouble that led to spinal fusion surgery in April of 2017, the 14-time major champion remains in search of his first victory since the 2013 Bridgestone.
